Before installing
Linux Spectre is an x86_64 Debian-based GNOME desktop. The complete installation image is designed to boot into a live environment and provide a graphical installation workflow. A virtual machine is the safest place to evaluate it before considering physical hardware.
In the tested workflow: 2 virtual CPUs, 4 GB memory, a fresh 40 GB virtual disk, VMSVGA graphics and NAT networking.
A verified ISO file, enough free storage, a working virtualizer, and a backup of anything that could be affected.
Verify the image
Download only from a project-controlled location once a public link is available. Verify the SHA-256 digest before writing an image to physical media or attaching it to a virtual machine. A changed filename does not change the bytes or digest.
sha256sum Spectre-OS-1.0-x86_64.isoFor the developer-validated image, compare the complete hexadecimal output with:
Create a VirtualBox VM
- Create a new VM
Choose a Linux / Debian (64-bit) guest profile, a new virtual disk and the evaluated resource settings.
- Attach the verified ISO
Choose the Linux Spectre 1.0 ISO as the virtual optical drive media. Set graphics controller to VMSVGA and keep standard NAT for initial networking.
- Boot the live environment
Confirm desktop controls respond before opening the graphical installer.
- Install to the new virtual disk
Select the new VM disk, review each storage selection carefully and finish the installer. Partitioning or formatting affects the chosen disk.
- Detach the ISO after install
Shut down the VM, remove the installer ISO from its optical drive, and boot from the installed virtual disk.
Your first login
Use the local account created during installation. Confirm the GNOME desktop and Spectre branding load.
- Check the kernel
Open Terminal and verify the expected Spectre kernel suffix.
- Open ToolHub
Explore the bundled catalog. Kali tools are not installed in bulk; initialization may download the official Kali image.
- Use a safe first test
Install only a familiar utility such as Nmap through ToolHub, then check its version.
- Reboot once
Confirm the desktop, VirtualBox display service and existing Kali container persist through a normal restart.
uname -rfindmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE /The tested installed image returned 7.1.8-spectre and an ext4 root filesystem. Other storage layouts are not ruled out by that one test.
First-day checklist
- Desktop, keyboard, mouse, audio, networking and storage work for your setup.
- The ISO checksum matches the trusted digest.
- You know whether a command targets the desktop host or the Kali container.
- You have backed up important files before changing packages or configuration.
- ToolHub starts and its catalog is visible even before the first Kali download.
- After reboot, any selected Kali tools are still installed in the same container.
